Mike and Molly were rescued on Staten Island after being cruelly dumped by humans. While trying to surviuve, they were then attacked by a predator. Once safe at Mockingbird, they spent several months in the farmhouse getting well. Molly's wound was so deep that her spine was exposed and they were traumatized. But- they had so much will to LIVE.
After 3 months of dedicated wound care, medications and injections, they were finally cleared to go outside! They spent the next several years battling a few health setbacks but always had one another for comfort.
On May 17th, 2023 we lost Mike to an aggressive and degenerative bilateral hock arthritis. Mike had sadly been struggling with this arthritis for almost the entire time he's been with us. Over the years we attempted 3D printed leg supports, braces, a custom wheelchair, a sling, a slew of medications and a tailored coop and aviary, but it was clear that his suffering was beyond anything we could fix, so we waited for Molly to let us know it was time to let him go.
Molly stayed by his side every moment even when she'd rather be in the water or foraging in the sun, Mike couldn't make it out to be with her any longer. She indicated this week that her worry for him became distressing, and we knew it was time.
Our hearts are absolutely shattered and we are doing everything possible to make Molly know that she isn't alone and we honor her aching heart. Mike passed away peacefully in Jonell's arms and Molly was right there by his side as he took his last breath.
He is no longer in pain or stressed, but this is easily one of the most difficult losses we've had here at Mockingbird- mostly because it's not just us humans affected by his loss, but his beloved life partner Molly who is grieving the hardest.
Ever since Bovee (our very first chicken rescue over 5 years ago) entered into palliative care last month, we created "The Bovee Fund" that allocates all bird related donations towards the care of our avian friends. Birds are the most expolited and abused animals on planet earth, and also the most costly to treat medically (as they require a board certified avian vet for skilled treatment).
All proceeds of the Mike & Molly t-shirt sales will be directed towards The Bovee Fund for all future avian vet care.
Thank you for following along and loving their love story. Mike and Molly have shown us just how much love can help heal us and keep us going despite all of the odds.
